materia viva
Mineral powder wall coating for interiors and exteriors, mixed with natural components.
materia viva - v.2025-04-10
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Materia Viva is a powdered mineral wall coating for interior and exterior use, based on hydraulic lime, air lime, carefully selected aggregates and rheological modifiers to ensure excellent workability.
Materia Viva is designed to be mixed with natural components - Materia Viva "Deco Powders" to create decorative finishes inspired by living organisms and our planet's soil, echoing themes of sustainability.
Materia Viva outdoors evolves over time, developing a natural patina that enhances the beauty of surfaces, creating a lived-in and authentic effect. Exposure to atmospheric agents may slightly alter the color, giving character and charm to the product.
For outdoor use of Deco Powders, check their suitability in the MIXING REPORTS section.

MIXTURE PREPARATION
MIXTURE PREPARATION
Preparation should be done by slowly pouring Materia Viva into the water and stir slowly with a mechanical stirrer. Add Materia Viva "Deco Powders" and mix the mixture for about 3 minutes until fully blended.
The resulting mix must provide a uniform, thixotropic and lump-free mortar, which is why homogenisation stirring cannot be performed manually.
Allow to stand for 5-10 minutes before application.
Do not use the product beyond the pot-life, not even if the mixture viscosity seems to allow it.
During application, do not add additional water to reduce viscosity, as this compromises the mechanical properties.

15 Kg Materia Viva + 10 kg MV D.P. Cocciopesto (earthenware) + 7-7,5 l of water V V
15 Kg Materia Viva + 5 kg MV D.P. Pomice (pumice) + 6-6,5 l of water V V
15 Kg Materia Viva + 5 kg MV D.P. Conchiglia (shell) + 4,5-5 l of water V V
15 Kg Materia Viva + 1 kg MV D.P. Sughero (cork) + 6,5-7 l of water V
Because they are natural products, small variations may occur between batches in the amount of water in the mix and in the physical and colour characteristics of the aggregates used, without compromising the final appearance.

COLORATION
COLORATION
• It is possible to colour Materia Viva by pouring the water needed to prepare the mortar into a large, clean container and adding the desired mixture of dyes.
• The mixing water must be dosed and kept constant for the subsequent colouring of the product.
• Slowly pour Materia Viva into the water. Mix with a mechanical stirrer slowly, without forming lumps; then add Materia Viva 'Deco Powders' to the mortar, and mix slowly with a mechanical stirrer.
• Allow to stand for 5-10 minutes before application.
• Changing production batches may result in different final colours.

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
(Referred to environmental conditions T=25° C, RH=65%)
The surface must be completely smooth, dry and free of dust, and of humidity-salt stains. Remove any traces of release agent.
Remove the degraded or detaching parts and dirt residues mechanically with hand tools or high-pressure hydro washing. Protect the exposed reinforcement rods and fill hollows with appropriate non-shrinking mortars. Before application, wait for the backgrounds to dry fully.
Once the background is dry and compact, use a brush to apply one diluted coat of Decofix (micronized wall fixative).
For even non-flaking backgrounds, as an alternative, use a brush to apply a coat of diluted Novaprimer (water-based pigmented acrylic fixative).
To prepare the background, we recommend applying one or two coats of Archi+ Fondo (mineral primer plaster). Due to its grain size and absorption, Archi+ Fondo helps to deposit the correct amount of Materia Viva, give control over the thickness applied, and makes the drying of Materia Viva uniform and homogeneous.
Wait until the background is completely dry. Then use a stainless-steel trowel to apply a layer of Materia Viva mixed with Materia Viva "Deco Powders". Work on the surface while it is still wet, depending on the desired aesthetic effect.
For aesthetic or site requirements, an additional layer of Materia Viva can be applied.
To enhance the appearance of Materia Viva we recommend sanding the surface dry using a random orbital sander with abrasive grit of 80-100.

PREPARATION AND DILUTION OF THE PROTECTIVES
PREPARATION AND DILUTION OF THE PROTECTIVES
INDOOR SURFACE PROTECTION

Before any protection, the surfaces must be dry. Depending on the applied thickness, the type of substrate, its absorption, and the environmental and site conditions, the usual time for surface recoating is about 24 hours.

Non-filmogenic protection with Cera Wax Plus
the application of Cera Wax Plus gives the treated surface smoothness, a reduction in surface absorption, and a mild protection against accidental contact with water.
Use a glove or a sponge trowel to apply a undiluted first coat of Cera Wax Plus, taking care to saturate the pores of the background by distributing the product evenly over the entire surface.
Wait for the surface to dry completely, then use a sponge to apply a second undiluted coat of Cera Wax Plus. When the treated surface is dry to the touch, polish with a cloth. Polishing can be done manually with a cloth or with a roto-orbital sander equipped with a suitable wool cover. For construction-site requirements it is possible to apply further coats of Cera Wax Plus, following the methods described above.
Drying time: to the touch in about 30 minutes, complete in 4 hours depending on the type of background, its absorption rate, and environmental conditions. Optimum performance is normally obtained 24-48 hours after application of the last coat.

Non-filmogenic protection with Nova Wall_Care:
we recommend for all contexts where good resistance to water and multiple water- and oil-soluble substances is required.
This can be achieved by applying two or more coats of Nova_Wall Care (water-repellent beeswax), which protects the surface without altering its appearance. It is the classic solution for this type of finish.
Use a brush to apply a first diluted coat of Nova_Wall Care, taking care to saturate the pores of the background, and distributing the product evenly over the entire surface.
Wait for the surface to dry completely, then use a sponge to apply a second undiluted of Nova_Wall Care. When the treated surface is dry to the touch, polish with a cloth. Polishing can be done manually with a cloth or with a roto-orbital sander equipped with a suitable wool cover. For construction-site requirements, it is possible to apply further layers of Nova_Wall Care can be applied, following the methods described above.
Drying time: to the touch in about 30 minutes, complete in 4 hours depending on the type of background, its absorption rate, and environmental conditions. Optimum performance is normally obtained 48-72 hours after application of the last coat.

Non-film-forming protection with Fase Silossanica:
Apply, with a sponge or a wool glove, a layer of Fase Silossanica diluted with a maximum of 100% water. Work the surface according to the desired effect.
It is possible to use Fase Silossanica in transparency, thus creating a matte finish with the possibility of obtaining tones and color shades based on the technique used and the applied colors.
For aesthetic or site needs, a second layer of Siloxane Phase can be applied in the previously described manner.
Drying time: about 24 hours depending on the type of substrate, its absorption, and the environmental conditions.

The application of non-film-forming protections creates a very thin protective barrier suitable for the protection of vertical surfaces.
The application of a thick layer of protective waxes can generate aesthetic anomalies.
For more information on protection products, consult the relevant technical data sheets.

OUTDOOR SURFACE PROTECTION

Not provided.
Materia Viva outdoors evolves over time, developing a natural patina creating a lived-in and authentic effect. Exposure to atmospheric agents may slightly alter the color, giving character and charm to the product.

RECOMMENDATION
RECOMMENDATION
The material must be applied while protecting it from heat changes throughout the application cycle.
As drying and carbonation are greatly affected by heat and humidity, apply the product at air and substrate temperatures of 10°C to 35°C, and relative humidity 75%; substrate humidity must be 10%.
The exposure to low ambient temperatures of surfaces treated with mineral finishes can cause bleaching of the finish during the carbonatation process. This phenomenon may prove to be irreversible.
We recommend finishing each job with materials from the same production batch.

CLEANING OF TOOLS
CLEANING OF TOOLS
With water, immediately after use.
